August 6, 2012, Tokyo, Japan - UNIQLO today announces that it has decided to continue operations at the UNIQLO Sea Plaza Kamaishi Store, which opened under the UNIQLO Recovery Assistance Project. The city of Kamaishi, Iwate Prefecture, was devastated by the earthquake and tsunami that struck northeastern Japan on March 11, 2011. The company opened the UNIQLO Sea Plaza Kamaishi Store as a temporary retail location on March 9, 2012, as part of its efforts to provide long-term assistance in areas that were hit hard by the disaster. UNIQLO initially only intended to run this store for a year, but it has decided to keep it open after receiving numerous requests from consumers and local government offices.

UNIQLO started distributing free clothing and providing assistance throughout the Tohoku region immediately after the disaster. By working with people in devastated communities, the company has gained a better understanding of local needs.

UNIQLO Recovery Assistance Project

The UNIQLO Recovery Assistance Project was launched in March 2012 to provide assistance until February 2015 in communities in a number of prefectures that are recovering from the destruction of the Great East Japan Earthquake, including Miyagi, Iwate and Fukushima. UNIQLO is working with nongovernmental organizations to help these communities rebuild, create employment and become independent of aid. Under this initiative, the company opened the UNIQLO Kesennuma Store in Kesennuma, Miyagi Prefecture, and the UNIQLO Sea Plaza Kamaishi Store in Kamaishi, Iwate Prefecture, on a temporary basis. It also reopened the UNIQLO Haramachi Store in Fukushima Prefecture, which was briefly closed in the wake of the disaster on March 11, 2011.

From March to May 2012, UNIQLO held a donation drive at all of its stores in Japan, collecting a total of 10,928,565 yen. It plans to provide these funds to its NGO partners under the UNIQLO Recovery Assistance Project. UNIQLO thanks its customers for their cash contributions and support.
