Fast Retailing Co., Ltd. today issued its Sustainability Report 2022, now available on the Fast Retailing website.

Fast Retailing, guided by its sustainability statement Unlocking the Power of Clothing, works to promote initiatives that support the development of a better society through its apparel business. The 2022 report centers on the theme "An Age of Opportunity," and presents a summary of Fast Retailing's sustainability measures. This year's report builds on the format adopted for last year's publication, and aims to communicate with a broad range of customers and stakeholders in an easy-to-understand manner.

The opening special feature of the report is an exclusive conversation between medical scientist Shinya Yamanaka, Director of Center for iPS Cell Research and Application at Kyoto University, and Tadashi Yanai, Chairman, President & CEO of Fast Retailing Group. The two-part discussion explores issues that have emerged as the pandemic persists, and the path forward. In a situation that cannot be predicted with leading-edge technology, data and information alone, the two leaders reflect on potential forces that could drive change in the world, the universal decency of humanity, and connections across different fields. Subsequent special feature pages present the evolution of the LifeWear concept of "the ultimate in everyday clothing, designed to make everyone's life better," the Fast Retailing vision for creating a "new industry" of clothing, and measures to make this a reality, including: climate actions, reducing waste, and efforts to realize a circular economy.

The second half of the report features a discussion between UNIQLO global brand ambassador and wheelchair tennis great Shingo Kunieda, and a young UX (user experience) designer working in the aerospace industry, focusing on how society connects technology and people. The report also describes recent Fast Retailing efforts to create clothing that improves lives and contributes to the realization of a sustainable world, approached from diverse viewpoints. This includes suggestions from an emerging generation working hard to solve social problems around the world, and also the backdrop of product development from a customer-oriented perspective.

The report also presents points of view from outside organizations, such as United Nations agencies Fast Retailing is working with to realize a sustainable world. These include an interview with Mr. Filippo Grandi, United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), the agency with which Fast Retailing has had a global partnership for a decade. In addition, Ms. Michiko Miyamoto, Deputy Director of the International Labour Organization (ILO) Country Office for Indonesia and Timor-Leste, who is working to enhance social security frameworks and to create a better labor environment for workers in Asia, talks about the role of private companies in establishing environments where all people can work with purpose and dignity.
