Global apparel retailer UNIQLO will release of a new collection for its PEACE FOR ALL charity T-shirt project created in collaboration with the international photographic cooperative Magnum Photos, on Friday, September 20th. As part of this project, 「GLOBAL PHOTO EXHIBITION - PEACE FOR ALL」 will be held in London, Tokyo, New York, Hanoi, Seoul, and other locations around the world. The exhibition combining UNIQLO's "power of clothing" with Magnum Photos' "power of photography," arose from a desire for a future in which all people can live safely, and hope for world peace.
Moments from relief work captured by Magnum Photos photographers
Cristina de Middel, president of Magnum Photos, the world's premier photographic cooperative, and member photographers Olivia Arthur and Lindokuhle Sobekwa, traveled to Vietnam, Romania, and Ethiopia, countries which has been providing humanitarian assistance through the PEACE FOR ALL recipient organizations, to photograph moments of local support activities from their own perspectives. The final exhibition of 63 works, expressed through the fusion of journalism and art, vividly conveys where, how, and who in the world is supported by the action of buying and wearing a T-shirt.
Tokyo exhibition presented in a public space
The Tokyo exhibition will be held from September 19th to the 27th, 2024, at the square in front of United Nations University in Aoyama, a public space accessible to everyone. The curator of the Tokyo Photographic Art Museum, one of the few museums in the world specializing in photography and video media, has been invited as guest curator to present UNIQLO's first full-scale photo exhibition. The audio guide narration will be provided by PEACE FOR ALL collaborators Haruka Ayase, Kashiwa Sato, and Shingo Kunieda. Audio descriptions for some photos include the current situation at the support site, the background for the photo, and the photographer's thoughts.

Cristina de Middel
It is well known that creativity sits in our capacity to subvert the given order of things and the meanings we learned in our journey to adulthood. In my work, I reconnect to the absolute power that we are born with and use while we are still children. It's the same power that turns afolded piece of paper into a boat or a pencil into a rocket and I believe that looking at the world as a place you can change and modify is an essential skill to remind the next generation if we want to make a change. Working with these children in Vietnam gave me plenty of hope for what was to come and it was also a lot of fun.

The most powerful tool that children have is their imagination. So I wanted to create a space where these children could come and express themselves and play with whatever came into their heads. There was a lot of giggling and some inventive creatures and poses.

I learn so much from the people I photograph. Working with people in Aw-barre Camp, Hope, Dreams, and Resilience became a central conversation I wanted my work to represent. I wanted to play with metaphors of the rainbow that symbolize hope and promise of a better time to come, as well as a powerful quote from one of the people I worked with. The image is set in a landscape on a border that separates Ethiopia from the Somali border, inhabited by Somalian refugees.
