Supporting Workers Seeking a Higher Minimum Wage in Bangladesh

As an affiliate of Fair Labor Association (FLA), Fast Retailing supports points made in the FLA's recent letter to the Chairman of the Minimum Wage Board and the government of Bangladesh. This letter backs local worker and union demands for an increased minimum wage to keep pace with rising living costs in Bangladesh.

On this issue, Fast Retailing calls for meaningful stakeholder engagement, including dialogue with worker representatives and trade unions in setting a new minimum wage. We also ask that freedom of association and collective bargaining are fully respected and upheld throughout this consultation process.

Responsible purchasing

Fast Retailing considers various factors when making purchasing decisions, including the statutory minimum wage in line with our Responsible Purchasing Policy. This policy is operationalized through regular training, and we continuously improve our purchasing practices using feedback collected from business partners via an anonymous questionnaire. Our Responsible Purchasing practices are applied in all locations where we conduct manufacturing, including Bangladesh.

Support for Bangladesh

Bangladesh is an important sourcing country for Fast Retailing. We are committed to upholding worker rights and to ensuring safe working conditions in Bangladesh, while contributing to its continued economic development.

Fast Retailing is an active participant in several stakeholder initiatives to protect workers in Bangladesh, including the International ACCORD and Better Work. We also support an International Labour Organization (ILO) program to provide income protection and medical care for workers and their families in Bangladesh following employment-related injuries - the first of its kind in the country. In addition, Fast Retailing's Women Empowerment Program helps more women in Bangladesh become leaders in the workplace. To date, the program has focused on providing advanced leadership and technical-skills training sessions for female workers who aspire to become supervisors.
