Fast Retailing’s Diversity & Inclusion Promotion Team is working to create an environment where all multinational employees working at its global headquarters in Tokyo can make full use of their talents and flourish at work. As part of these efforts, the team held roundtable discussion bringing together Japan-based multinational employees and senior company executives.

About Unconsious Bias

Diverse values are critical for the decision-making process in a global company. To gather diverse viewpoints, a questionnaire survey was distributed to select multinational employees. The survey revealed that many respondents are keen to maximize their performance through a mentoring program that would help them build a greater understanding of Japan and of Fast Retailing’s corporate culture, while also creating opportunities to build networks inside the company.

As a follow-up, a roundtable discussion was held to increase understanding of Fast Retailing’s philosophy and culture through a dialogue between multinational employees and corporate officers. The session also helped to build networks between corporate officers from different departments and participants with various roles from different sections.

Seven corporate officers attended the session, with each officer forming an individual group consisting of between five to seven multinational employees. The corporate officers spoke about their personal career histories, after which participants introduced themselves. This was followed by free talk time, with lively discussions on what is necessary to show leadership at the company and the importance of developing a global culture at Fast Retailing HQ.

A questionnaire following the session revealed participant sentiments, including:
“It was extremely useful for a better understanding of Fast Retailing’s philosophy and for my personal development to become a true business leader."
"It was an excellent opportunity for networking with participants from different departments who have diverse experience and are at different stages of their career.”

Similar roundtable discussion will be regularly held going forward.
