Job Description

There are many different kinds of clothing in the world, but UNIQLO creates clothing with a completely new approach and delivers it to customers around the globe.

We are looking for designers to join us in creating clothing that delights customers around the world.

■Department Overview:
The R&D Department is a team of experts dedicated to bringing the “LifeWear” concept—the ultimate everyday wear—to life. Our in-house designers and patternmakers are active across six global locations centered in Tokyo (Tokyo, Shanghai, Paris, London, New York, and Los Angeles).Our mission is to plan products that align with people’s lifestyles, environments, and the times, and to translate designs driven by real-world needs into the “LifeWear” concept. We aim to continuously provide thoughtfully designed, simple clothing that improves and enriches the lives of people around the world. Through our clothing, we strive to continuously drive innovation in society.

■Job Description: You will be responsible for apparel design. Specifically, your duties will include the following: 
・New Product Development and Proposals:
Through global market research and trend analysis, you will plan products that better match people’s living environments, lifestyles, and the times, embodying the “LifeWear” concept, and translate these ideas into designs.
・Proposals at Product Meetings:
We hold product meetings twice a year—for SS (Spring/Summer) and FW (Fall/Winter)—to decide which items to produce, in what colors, materials, and silhouettes, in what quantities, and how to market them. You will present your product proposals during these meetings.Additionally, through discussions with leaders from various internal departments worldwide—including MD, VMD, Product Planning, MK, and global country managers—you will participate in developing product strategies and sales plans that encompass the entire process from product development to delivery to the customer.
・Management of the Product Development Process:
We expect you to lead the entire process from brainstorming ideas to product commercialization. As needed, you will visit partner fabric mills and sewing factories to ensure high-quality manufacturing.
・The scope of items includes all products sold in the women’s category—such as outerwear, bottoms, shirts, T-shirts, knitwear, innerwear, and loungewear—though your specific focus area will be determined upon joining, taking into account your areas of expertise.

・The Job Description may change within the scope of duties related to various headquarters departments due to department transfers or organizational changes.

■ Career Path
Depending on your aspirations and aptitude, there are diverse career opportunities available as a designer, including changes within the Women’s division’s product categories, rotations to different gender and age groups such as Men’s and Kids, and career development at other global locations.

[Designer Career Example]
After joining as a Women’s Designer, the candidate was promoted within one year due to their recognized product development and design proposal skills in their assigned category. They were subsequently assigned to increasingly challenging product categories, taking on the role of translating the Lifewear concept into materials, silhouettes, and designs to bring it to life through clothing. In their third year, they were transferred to the London office.There, in addition to product planning that took into account European fashion culture and market characteristics, she led collaboration projects with external creators. Through close communication with these creators, she drove the entire process from planning and development to design.

Qualifications

■ Required Experience, Skills, and Abilities
・Experience in designing women’s apparel (5+ years of professional experience)
・Experience managing the entire process from product planning to design to mass production while overseeing multiple items
 (Experience designing products, placing orders with factories, and overseeing production)
・Excellent communication skills in Japanese or English

Work Conditions

■Employment Type
First Year: Contract Employee (Fixed-term contract with a 3-month probationary period)
(Starting from the second year, if performance and evaluations meet the criteria for regular employment, the employee will be converted to a regular employee)
*Employment contracts may be renewed based on the company’s operational needs and the employee’s performance (no automatic renewal)
*There is no limit on the total duration or number of contract renewals.

■Annual Salary
・Annual Salary Range: 5.47 million yen – 12.06 million yen (Monthly Salary: 360,000 yen – 670,000 yen)
・Allowances: Commuting allowance, overtime allowance, etc. (※All subject to company regulations)
・Bonuses: Semi-annual bonuses twice a year, year-end bonus (eligibility and amount determined based on company performance and performance evaluations)
・Promotions twice a year (determined based on performance evaluations)
*Salary will be determined based on company regulations, taking into account your previous annual income and experience, and is not limited to the figures listed above

■ Working Hours
・Standard working hours, flex-time system, or managerial/supervisory status (determined based on job duties, expected role, and assigned department; details will be provided during the final interview)

8 hours of actual work and 1-hour break between 7:00 AM and 6:00 PM
・Flexible Work Hours System
Standard daily working hours: 8 hours; Break: 1 hour
Core hours: 9:00 AM–2:00 PM
Flexible hours: 6:00 AM–9:00 AM and 2:00 PM–8:00 PM (Overtime work may be required)
・Supervisors
Based on the working hours of the employee’s department; left to the employee’s discretion

■ Holidays and Leave
Two days off per week (Saturdays and Sundays) Annual paid leave, special leave (including bereavement leave), childcare and nursing care leave systems, etc.
*Whether public holidays are considered days off in addition to the days off listed above will be specified individually in the contract for part-time employees.
*In addition to paid leave, special leave is granted in the first and second halves of the fiscal year (the number of days granted varies depending on employment status and the company to which the employee belongs)
