Four first-year IT graduates speak openly with us about their reasons for joining Fast Retailing, their daily work, and what the future will hold.

今後のキャリアについて本音で話します。
Fast Retailing recruits the most qualified IT professionals from all over the world. We began in India in 2019 and have so far hired 17 graduates. Four of them accepted to join a roundtable discussion with us and answer such questions as why they joined Fast Retailing, the experience they are gaining during their first year and future career plans. This session also provides a firsthand introduction of the work-life balance at Fast Retailing in our very first phase of IT recruitment.
ファーストリテイリングでは、世界中で優秀なIT人材の採用を行っています。2019年度は、インドで採用活動を開始し、17名の新卒を採用しました。このトークセッションでは、4名の社員に、日本企業であるファーストリテイリングに入社した理由や、入社1年目でどのような仕事に携わっているのか、今後のキャリアプランなどについて話を聞きました。IT採用1期生だからこそ分かる、リアルなファーストリテイリングをご紹介します。
Why did you choose Fast Retailing as your first choice of work?
V. R. Dutta - The reason I chose Fast Retailing is because it is a global company, and the time is just right for its IT organization to expand. I thought that only a growing organization can let me upgrade my skills while working in a responsible position. The best part about Fast Retailing is that people here are ready to let me explore other areas as well, while I continue to grow as an engineer.
M. Ravindra - I feel much the same! It was having a variety of opportunities that attracted me to my job. What appeals to me is the fact that I could start working as an engineer, while polishing my technical skills and gradually receive the opportunity to become a manager. Further, this one year in Fast Retailing has given me a better idea of my career. Now the responsibility is on me to gather different experiences and continue to accept bigger challenges.
U. Vallurie - I always wanted to work as an engineer in the fashion industry. Fast Retailing is a globally active apparel company. I had had a dream of working on big projects and in partnership with a variety of companies, and I was convinced that only Fast Retailing could help me achieve that, while exposing me to newer challenges.
P. Ajwani - One of the decisive factors was our ‘customer first policy.’ While almost every company claims it offers superior customer service, not all deliver on that promise. However, Fast Retailing always stays true to its claims. For example, our competitors always fall victim to trends and design trendy wear that may not be comfortable. I was drawn to Fast Retailing because it is known for creating comfort-oriented clothing, what we call LifeWear.
ファーストリテイリングに入社した理由を教えてください。
V. R. Dutta - 私が入社した理由は、グローバル規模の会社で、IT組織がさらに拡大するタイミングだったことです。成長し続けている組織なら、自分のスキルを活かして、責任を持ったポジションで働けると思いました。また、エンジニアとしての成長はもちろん、それ以外の分野に挑戦するチャンスがあることも魅力に感じました。
M. Ravindra - 私も、キャリアの幅の広さに惹かれました。エンジニアとしてのスキルを高められる上、その後、マネジメントに進む機会があることに魅力を感じました。入社してから、さらに明確にキャリアの描き方が見えてきたので、色々な経験を積んで、大きく挑戦していきたいと思っています。
U. Vallurie - 私は、エンジニアとしての技術を活かす先として、ファッション業界を志望していました。ファーストリテイリングは、グローバルで見ても、大きな規模のファッション企業。しかも、テクノロジーを使った大きなプロジェクトを立ち上げたり、様々な企業とパートナーシップを結んでおり、新たなチャレンジをするには最適な会社だと感じました。
P. Ajwani - 徹底した「お客様主義」も、入社の決め手のひとつでした。どこの会社も、お客様主義とはいうものの、ファーストリテイリングは、その体現度合いが違いました。例えば、他のファッション企業は、トレンドに合わせて服を作りますが、私たちが作るのは「LifeWear」。時代に左右されずに、お客様の日常を豊かにする服を作る、という意識が徹底されていることに惹かれて入社しました。
Tell us about your current job.
M. Ravindra - I work as a software engineer and I develop E-commerce sites. Fast Retailing remains flooded with new learning opportunities, and I am intrigued to use various programming languages as needs arise.
P. Ajwani - It is not common for a big company like Fast Retailing to let us try new techniques each time. I work here as a front-end engineer for the content management system used by our E-commerce team. I find my work extremely interesting since it is challenging to create user-friendly screens by always trying out something new.
V. R. Dutta - I am a software engineer and in charge of the Customer Data Integration Project. I consider myself lucky that, within one year of joining, I received an opportunity to work on a big project of integrating systems that were being used individually in every part of the world. One of the special things about Fast Retailing is that we get to work on big projects and given responsibility right from our first year.
U. Vallurie - I work as a back-end engineer and my focus is product information engineering. I prefer to work at Fast Retailing because it is like working in an actual store, and what I wish to say makes more sense to someone with store experience. It is not too difficult for me to know and deliver to a customer’s precise expectations, mainly because I have experience dealing with customers and in marketing methodologies. This has helped me to deliver better and better shopping experiences to customers.
現在の仕事内容を教えてください。
M. Ravindra - ソフトウエアエンジニアとして、ECサイトの開発を担当しています。常に新しいことを学ぶ機会があふれているのが、面白いですね。技術も、プログラミング言語も、新しいものに触れ続けているので、刺激的です。
P. Ajwani - 確かに、大きな会社なのに、新しい技術を試せるのは、魅力的ですね。私は、ECの担当者が使うコンテンツ管理システムのフロントエンジニアとして働いています。新しい技術を使って、より使いやすい画面を作るのは、面白い仕事です。
V. R. Dutta - 私は、ソフトウエアエンジニアとして、顧客データの統合プロジェクトを担当しています。様々な国で、バラバラに使われていたシステムを、一つに統合するという大きなプロジェクトを、入社１年目で任されたことには驚きましたが、挑戦できる機会があるのは面白いですし、頑張ろうと思えます。１年目から大きな仕事を任せてもらえるのは、ファーストリテイリングの特徴だと思います。
U. Vallurie - 私は、バックエンドエンジニアとして、製品情報に関わる仕事をしています。個人的には、実店舗で学ぶ機会があることも、ここで働く醍醐味だと思います。実店舗の経験があると、イメージできる範囲が、全然違います。店舗でのお客様との接し方や、販売方法を体験したからこそ、お客様のより良い買い物体験を、どう作っていけばいいのかを考えて、エンジニアリングの仕事に向き合うことができます。
Is there anything about your job that concerned you before joining Fast Retailing?
U. Vallurie - The Japanese language was my only concern. As I did not know the language, I was not sure whether I would be able to communicate with Japanese people. However, I had sufficient chance to learn Japanese during two months of training prior to coming to Japan. Even after starting my job, we are taking language lessons twice a week arranged by the company.
P. Ajwani - It is not as difficult as we imagined because many people in the IT Department know English. There are many foreigners in our team and everybody, starting with my superiors, can communicate in English. I am not very good at learning languages, but fortunately I do not have to worry any more as everybody here can communicate in English without any problem.
V. R. Dutta - Japanese people are known for working late. The only thing on my mind prior to joining was whether I would have to work until late at night, although I was never worried as such. But then I came to Japan and saw that many people managed to establish a good work-life balance. In addition, at Fast Retailing we work as a team and goals are set for teams, not individuals. It turned out to be very different from what I had imagined.
M. Ravindra - Although I was not worried about anything before coming, I found it a bit hard to find vegetarian food. My seniors and colleagues introduced me to some restaurants serving vegetarian, and this was helpful to me. We are able to interact a lot with each other in the company, and everybody cooperates so much that I literally have nothing to worry about my daily life any more.
入社前に不安だったことはありますか？
U. Vallurie - 私の心配は、日本語だけでした。日本語を勉強したことがなかったので、コミュニケーションが取れるのか不安でした。ただ、来日前に2ヶ月間の日本語研修がありましたし、仕事が始まってからも、週2回の日本語研修があるので、日本語を勉強する機会は充実しています。
P. Ajwani - IT部門では、英語を使える人が多いので、想像していたより不便さを感じることは少ないですよね。色々な国から来ている人がいますし、上司をはじめ、国籍を問わず、英語でコミュニケーションをとれます。私も語学が不安でしたが、コミュニケーション上の問題はなく、語学への心配はなくなりました。
V. R. Dutta - 私は、不安は全くなかったのですが、日本人は、一人で黙々と長時間労働をしている印象があったので、私も夜遅くまで働くのかと思っていました。しかし、実際に働いてみると、生活とのバランスを保って働いている人が多いですね。それに、ファーストリテイリングでは、一人ではなく、チームで結果を出す仕事が多くて、入社前の印象と大きく変わりました。
M. Ravindra - 私も不安はなかったのですが、実際に来てから、食事で少し困りました。私はベジタリアンで、どこに行けばベジフードが食べられるかわからなかったです。とはいえ、会社の先輩や同僚が助けてくれたので、大きなトラブルはありませんでした。また、会社では、役員と一対一で面談する機会もあったりと、周りの人にあらゆる面でサポートしてもらえるので、生活で困ったことはないですね。
Would you like to share your career plan with us? Do you have a message to students?
P. Ajwani - I wish to gather technical experience for a couple of years and be able to drive a project to completion. In 3 to 5 years, I see myself working as a manager of a store or an E-commerce business that can provide new value to customers. Advanced communication skills are required to work at Fast Retailing, so I would particularly recommend this job to those who like to communicate, are ready to take a plunge into something new, and are curious about new things happening around them.
U. Vallurie - With daily advancements in technology, one is constantly required to update his or her knowledge. The jobs at First Retailing are ideal for those who are willing to learn something new, as and when required. I would like to train myself further through my work at Fast Retailing and eventually run a company myself by utilizing technology.
M. Ravindra - I too am planning on gaining more technical expertise in the next 5 to 6 years, and then work as a manager with my technical background. I am sure Fast Retailing will give me the chance to be active globally, and because I aspire to be a globally active individual, I have promised myself to make the best of every opportunity I am given here.
V. R. Dutta - The jobs here are for open-minded individuals with a mindset to accept challenges and continue learning. In an organization full of diverse individuals, one of my goals is to create a team of people from various nationalities, speaking different languages, all working in harmony despite their different personalities. I aspire to work on bigger projects and do something that has global impact.
今後のキャリアプランと学生へのメッセージをお願いします。
P. Ajwani - 直近は、エンジニアとしての経験を積み、プロジェクト全体を進行できる人になりたいです。さらに3-5年後には、経営者として、店舗とECを繋ぎ、お客様に新たな価値を提供するようなビジネスを牽引したいです。ファーストリテイリングで働くには、高いコミュニケーションスキルが必要です。コミュニケーションを取ることが好きで、学ぶことに熱心な人や、新しいものに興味を持てる人にお薦めする職場です。
U. Vallurie - たしかに、テクノロジーが日々進化する中、常に新しい知識が必要なので、学び続けることが好きな人にファーストリテイリングは向いていると思います。私自身も、今の仕事でスキルアップをした上で、テクノロジーを活用して、会社を牽引する存在になりたいです。
M. Ravindra - 私も5-6年はエンジニアとしてのスキルを高めて、その後はエンジニアリングの分かるマネジメント人材として働きたいと考えています。ファーストリテイリングは、グローバルに挑戦するチャンスがある会社。ただ待っているだけでなく、自らチャンスをつかんで挑戦していく姿勢のある人に薦めたいですね。
V. R. Dutta - 挑戦していくためには、常にオープンマインドで、周りの人から積極的に教わろうという姿勢がある人が向いていると思います。多様な人が集まる組織の中で、言語や国籍にこだわらないチームを作ることが、私の将来の目標の一つです。そして、今以上の大きなプロジェクトに関わり、グローバル規模のインパクトがある仕事を進めていきたいです。
