Work

I joined Fast Retailing in 2018 after having worked in Canadian and Chinese consulting firms, and my present role is project management in the E-commerce Business Division. As a member of the Logistics Reform Project, I share inventory status and develop a new delivery system. Once completed, the new system will enable us to shorten delivery times to customers and prevent product defects. This project will be executed on a global scale, and not be limited to Japan.

Reason for joining

In the consulting firms where I worked previously, we could only present proposals to companies, but never work on them directly ourselves. However, I always felt that the key to success is to give shape to your own ideas, which changed my outlook towards my work and I decided to join the industry. The main reason for choosing Fast Retailing was its high speed of growth in Japan. Moreover, as the company was expanding overseas, I had more chances of being active on a global scale. I was particularly impressed with the company’s thorough implementation of corporate principles and its commitment towards providing superior services to customers.

Challenge
Photo Studio Launch Project

One impressive project I was able to work on since joining Fast Retailing was the creation of an in-house photo studio. Until then, for promoting products and models, the company mostly relied on external studios for taking advertisement photos, no one knew how to do that in-house. When planning the company studio, we had many things to consider, such as scale of project, can it generate a favorable return on investment, what are its personnel requirements, and of course optimum size.

Even after entering the testing phase, we realized that there were several points we could not understand by simulation alone. For example, the models to be used for photography - we use a variety of models in our advertising. While working on the project, each aspect like how to find models slowly started to unfold before us. One challenge was to assure the quality of the photographs. Only through repeated tests, did we learn about the differences in quality, how to achieve the desired quality, and show a product depending on the brand, all of which was difficult to understand by only knowing the material specifications.

After a difficult, and continuous, trial and error phase that lasted one and half years, we began operating a photography studio in UNIQLO City Office, in Ariake. By using an in-house studio, we can reduce expenses and sell products to customers at cheaper prices. It was a big challenge for me, to be given the opportunity to join such an important project immediately after joining the company.

Challenge
Logistics Reform Project

Currently I lead the Logistics Reform Project, which is also challenging to work on. We can bring about a huge change in the customer’s buying experience if we succeed in realizing O2O (Online to Offline), a link between E-commerce and physical stores. For example, if a customer orders a product from an E-commerce site and he or she collects it at a nearby store, from the inventory of that store, then the delivery time will be faster than if it were warehouse stock and is delivered to the customer from there. In this way, the product will make a valuable contribution toward logistics reform.

However, the logistics environment changes from country to country. It is extremely challenging to create a standard system that can be implemented on a global scale, because we must consider variations in land area, traffic conditions, and delivery expenses by country. For example, in a country like Japan, where delivery expenses are high, it is necessary to work area-by-area. At the same time, we must think of the possibility of partial orders, whereby some items are delivered from a store, while others from a warehouse. It is challenging as well as interesting to think about all such patterns when planning logistics.

After designing a blueprint of what is desired, the next step is to develop the system and decide on operations. For that, we first need to know the process flow of each store and participate in the actual logistics chain to get a feel for it. Based on calculations made at this stage, we will then create an infrastructure that is common for all countries.

Future
to Become an Industry Leader through Logistics Innovation

The first stage will be to complete the Logistics Reform Project currently underway and implement it globally. Through this project, we aim to deliver a customer’s desired products, wherever and whenever he or she wants. Since through this process items from stores, warehouses, or even factories will be delivered directly to a customer’s home or a pickup point nearby, I would call this type of service my “dream service” supposing I were a customer. This is possible to achieve for a company like Fast Retailing, because it has stores worldwide and focuses on logistics. With such a solid innovation experience, I hope to become a member of management who will be thought of as reliable when taking big decisions for the company, and someone who can help Fast Retailing grow into the world’s best apparel retailer.

Since our E-commerce Business Division is constantly seeking new techniques, it is one of the best places for IT personnel to gain concrete work experience. The division is especially suitable for risk-taking individuals who wish to try something new outside their own field, and for those who can think of reasons to do a task and the value that needs to be given to customers. It is a place where an individual’s ideas and opinions are respected and easily accepted; a promising environment for all who aspire to reach great heights in life, willing to work in a customer-centric business and make a difference to the world.
