Approximately 140,000 items collected, 90% donated to refugee camps.

During UNIQLO's one-month campaign back in September 2006 to offer recycling of all garments, we were able to collect approximately 140,000 items thanks to the cooperation of our customers.

 Breakdown
Reusable(support for developing countries): 92%
Fuel recycling(into electrical energy): 6%
Material recycling
(as industrial cotton waste, thermal insulation):
 2%

Approximately 92% of the used clothing collected was donated to refugee camps in Thailand and Nepal through UNHCR.

92% of clothing collected was deemed reusable and was donated to refugee camps in Thailand and Nepal with the full-scale cooperation of UNHCR and the recognized NPO organization, the Japan Relief Clothing Center. In addition, one of our UNIQLO directors visited the camps late February 2007 and joined in the clothing distribution in order to confirm that the garments collected from our customers were actually being distributed into the hands of those who needed them most, and also to get a firmer understanding of the local situation and needs.

Ensuring UNIQLO customer goodwill is surely delivered

The visit to the refugee camps enabled us to discuss directly with the inhabitants and this really brought home to us the absolute necessity and importance of clothing in a variety of senses including protection from the cold, sanitation, and improvement in the quality of daily living. This was the first visit to a refugee camp by a Japanese company that actually took part in the on-site clothing distribution. And since the donation of actual clothing in this way is extremely rare, the local people were very happy with what we had to offer. We have received requests to continue supporting both the Nepalese and Thai camps in the future.

The issue of refugees is a very significant one that deals with the dignity of human beings. As a company that advocates the wearing of casual clothing anywhere at anytime by anybody, we are very keen to continue doing whatever we can at our end.
