At UNIQLO, we are currently discussing ways to expand the initiative from the provision of relief clothing to support that increases self-sufficiency.We are also pursuing activities in Japan, such as by collaborating with schools and collecting used clothing from locations other than our stores, to achieve our goal of collecting 30 million items within five years so that one item can be delivered annually to every refugee the world over (approximately 31.7 million persons).

Activities to Support Self-Sufficiency

As a first step, we plan to offer sewing machines and fabric. In addition to this material support, we are also looking into the practicality of transferring basic skills for making clothing, such as sewing.

Collaboration with Schools

This year,we had the cooperation of the Tokyo Education Committee to engage in activities with three high schools.

Mihara High School

At Tokyo Metropolitan Mihara High School, we conducted a high school version of the All-Product Recycling Initiative with volunteer students as part of their classes. After producing posters and distributing flyers, we separated the collected items for refugee camps, in accordance with their needs, into 13 categories such as Men’s-Women’s, summer-winter and tops-bottoms.
As a result, we collected approximately 5,300 items.

Musashi High School

At Tokyo Metropolitan Musashi High School, the student council took on a leadership role and used summer recess and school festivals as opportunities for collecting a total of 1,721 items.
