In 2001, UNIQLO began supporting this Foundation. All UNIQLO stores have donation boxes so that customers can make contributions to support the Foundation, and we match all customer donations. We are proud to participate as a member of the Setouchi Olive Foundation Steering Committee and help to guide its operations.
What is the Setouchi Olive Foundation?
The objective of this Foundation is to plant olive and other trees in the Seto Inland Sea region of Japan to restore the greenery of areas where industrial waste was illegally dumped. The Foundation was formed in 2000 under the leadership of Kohei Nakabo and Tadao Ando. The first goal was to plant trees on the island of Teshima. Activities have subsequently expanded to cover Naoshima, Awajishima and other islands in the Seto Inland Sea. The goal is to plant more than one million trees. Within the next five to 10 years, the Foundation hopes to restore the natural beauty to areas throughout the Seto Inland Sea as an ongoing gift to future generations.

Deepening Employees' Understanding of Environmental Issues
- UNIQLO Volunteers Plant Olive Trees on Teshima -
Every year, we conduct a volunteer program in which our employees plant olive trees on Teshima, an island in Kagawa Prefecture. The event draws workers from stores in Kagawa and nearby Okayama Prefecture and from as far away as Tokyo and Kyushu. So far, a total of 100 employees have participated in this program. More than just a tree-planting event, it allows volunteers to meet local residents, learn the history of this region and gain firsthand knowledge of an environmental problem.
In all, 100 UNIQLO employees have participated in the annual Teshima tree-planting event.
