The Setouchi Olive Foundation was launched in 2000 by Tadao Ando and Kohei Nakabo, aiming to restore the once beautiful and fertile natural environment of the islands and shoreline of the Seto Naikai, Japan’s Inland Sea, including the island of Teshima, which was damaged by the illegal dumping of industrial waste.
In support of the activities of the Setouchi Olive Foundation, UNIQLO has solicited funds at its stores since 2001. Expanding its activities further, the Setouchi Olive Foundation gained NPO status and set up an administrative committee in July 2007.

Deepening Employees’ Understanding of Environmental Issues

UNIQLO Volunteers Plant Olive Trees on Teshima

Every year, we conduct a volunteer program in which our employees plant olive trees on Teshima, an island in Kagawa Prefecture. The event draws workers from stores in Kagawa and nearby Okayama Prefecture and from as far away as Tokyo and Kyushu. So far, a total of over 500 employees have participated in this program. More than just a tree-planting event, it allows volunteers to meet local residents, learn the history of this region and gain firsthand knowledge of an environmental problem.
